The 5 & 10 was Park Variety. Then we had Dottie's, Hollywood Cleaners, the dress store, Barry's Laundry and Jack the shoemaker. and don't forget the barber
with the horse chair for us little kids.

oh boy,, I remember the pizza man giving me a free slice cause I tried to help him learn more English. He let the kids just hang and listen to the jukebox. thanks bigtime for this memory!! I loved that pizza! and I just remember that the guy was a lot of fun

i remember a girl in my class named Paula who ate lunch there and then came back and got sick and our teacher (Mrs. Goldman?) said we shouldn't eat pizza because it has bad oil and makes kids sick. i have always thought of that "bad oil" everytime i've eaten a slice since. that pizza place was the cheap place to eat lunch (slices 15 cents). more expensive was the luncheonette where hamburgers were 30 cents and cheeseburgers 35. i thought it was unfair to charge 5 cents more for s slice of cheese and was going to bring my own one time but my mother stopped me...

Don't forget the corner drug store, where by the way I used to work three nights a week delivering things to people on the store's bike. It was owned by a couple, I forget their name, but they had a pharmacist that I had to work with named Alan Bashoff. Mr. Dweeb.

There was also a pharmacy on one corner and across from there was Dr. Shankman's sign hanging, on the corner of the Vleigh Place apartments..
Across the street from Dotties, was also Dr. Zeller's office. You had a flight of stairs to go up to his office to get those awful tetanus shots.

Sure, I remember the S&H Green Stamp store - I had the job of pasting my mother's stamps in the books, which I did willingly after looking through the catalog and seeing that you could get a small plane (a Piper Cub?) if you collected enough books (thousands, as I recall). When I realized how unattainable that goal was, I lost interest as there was very little of interest in the store; but I did get one of those study lamps with the green glass shade, whihc accompanied me to college.

Ice Cubes were my very favorite chocolates as a kid. They were German imports with hazelnut paste in them and they melted instantly on your tongue (the result of its hydrogenated coconut oil, I've since learned, which liquifies at 75 degrees). They sold for a nickle each, then later for a dime. They sell them on eBay these days...

And I do fondly remember the Vleigh Place Deli. I can still recall the smell of it, complex and insinuating. My parents would always remind me to get their German potato salad, which became my lifelong preference.

Thanks for the memories, Jack!

And wasn't there a place to get keys ..was there a supermarket across from dotties? And what about the sprinklers in the park there!

I was standing on corner of Leigh at the light by the drugstore on my way to kindergarten when Kennedy was shot! A lady came running out screaming..I had no clue what was going on ,,

Oh maybe green stamps?

There was indeed a supermarket there: Key Food, though it wasn't very super, just a grocery store. I don't remember any place to get keys, but I certainly remember the sprinkler head at the corner of Vleigh Place playground.  We used to throw our shirts on top the head, trying to suppress the water. Never worked.  And there was a scully (bottle-caps) court nearby it.  I spent many happy hours there...

The pharmacy was on the corner

i brought all my exposed film from my brownie camera to that pharmacy but, it was not on the corner (unless there was more than one pharmacy).  It was in the middle of the block across the street from Key Food.  Still have all the finished prints from there in my childhood photo album.

Hey there Peter - I have to say, I remember the pharmacy being on the corner too. Don't recall another one. And I could see it from my apartment.  Oddly enough, the only thing I ever remember buying there was a birthday gift for my mother: a necklace of big, pink crystals (glass, I assume).  I thought it was beautiful, but I noticed my mother never wore it. Seems odd in retrospect that they'd be selling costume jewelry like that, but that's what I remember.
