Flushing, NY Trivia: Do You Remember This?

The best pizza I ever had was at Mama Lucy's on Main Street. It's been 30 years but I can still taste that pizza and can still see the two guys who used to work there flipping dough over their heads.

Anyone remember their names?

One of my favourite places was the deli on Vleigh Place. Keeping myself supplied with Italian ices, wacky packages and gum used up most of my spending money as a child!

Any fans of the deli here? Do you remember the names of the two guys who ran it? They were there for years and years.

I remember it too. Next to the laundry mat. It was a long dark stairway.

Hmm, think you're correct. Although, their name was clearly ambiguous and nothing about 'Regency Lanes' was imperial or majestic. The dank and fusty stench, cracked bowling balls and unpalatable cuisine made Regency a real neighborhood 'joint.' With high tech bowling alleys charging upwards of $10.00 a game (see Chelsea Piers) I miss Regency.

I was on a league at the bowling alley, it was down a rickety flight of stairs. I never wanted to go because I was a terrible bowler and I would miss H.R Puffnstuff every Saturday morning!

My mom thinks that, before Baskin Robbins, the storefront was a pharmacy. Does anyone know if that's true? I only remember it as Baskin Robbins.

I checked with my Mom. She said it was an ice cream store before Baskin Robbins and thinks the name started with a C, but she can't remember at the moment.

While I was talking to her a couple of other places popped into my head...There was a bakery and I think the name was Cake Box. I always liked how the string to wrap the boxes came out of the holders hanging from the ceiling. I think that is where my mom would get her coffee cake for Mahjong. Also, there was deli called Alberts, which had the greatest hot dogs!

I think there were two bakeries, the Cake Box and then G & I Kosher bakery..... who remembers the Lox Box which was an "appetizing" store a few doors down from Angelos Pizza? The two candy stores were Goody's and Jasol's!

Oh! Albert's Deli had the greatest hot dogs, indeed, as well as the best matzoh ball soup! We always used to walk in, greet the owner, and say "Hi Albert!" Years later, we learned that "Albert" was his LAST name. We felt pretty silly!!! I also loved Cake Box's sugar twists. They had a specific name, but it escapes me now. And, yes, now that I think of it, I believe that Baskin Robbins was still an ice cream store, even before it had 31 flavors.

Baskin Robbins was originally a jewelry store. My grandmother bought me my Bar Mitzvah ring there. One time, it was held up and the owner chased the robber out onto Main St., shot and killed him. He was not charged! I remember going there the next day and seeing the dried bloodstains on the sidewalk. No one had bothered to clean it up. Curiosity of a 10 year old I guess! Next to the jeweler was the WORST candy store on Main St., "Bunny's Sweet Shoppe". Small and dark and another grouchy old man. I only stopped there because it was on the way to Hebrew School. Got a bunch of stuff for a nickel!
