The best pizza I ever had was at Mama Lucy's on Main Street. It's been 30 years but I can still taste that pizza and can still see the two guys who used to work there flipping dough over their heads.

Anyone remember their names?
____________

One of my favourite places was the deli on Vleigh Place. Keeping myself supplied with Italian ices, wacky packages and gum used up most of my spending money as a child!

Any fans of the deli here? Do you remember the names of the two guys who ran it? They were there for years and years.
____________

What bits of Flushing trivia do YOU remember?

Post questions and answers here!

Angelo's is still there, in case you were wondering - I do long for Mama Lucy's. 2 slices and a small drink for $1 - what could be better.

I have to drive from Boston to Queens for pizza and bagels from the Kosher bagel store near Campbell JHS a few time a year to satisfy my urge.

I fly from Atlanta occasionally for pizza and bagels on Main Street.

Hi Michele....and it is worth the trip---Listen, seriously, I am going up to Cape Cod on June 27....if you can meet me somewhere up there...I will bring you some bagels...and the bagel store is gone by Queens College.....sorry....take care., CINDY

Hey, Andy. I remember around the corner from the Main St. theatre was a podiatrist's office...Dr. Spencer Dubov. By the 5 & 10 , there was a deli. We always called it the "German Delicatessen", as opposed to the Jewish delis. Dorsey Drugs at 72nd Ave. and Main St.

We used to call it the German Delicatessen too! I remember I was always fascinated by the celery in their chicken salad. Each piece of celery was exactly the same size as each other and I always wondered how they did that! I am in Virginia now and all that Main Street food does not exist here. The closest is Baltimore, which is two hours away.

Yes. I believe you are right! Julio is the other guy. I thought it was Lou. Well, they sound a little similar, no? Nick and Julio. Two nice guys who made great pizza!

The woman who owned the five and dime name was Ruth My Mother and Grandmother used to talk to her all the time. I don't remember the husbands name. But he wasn't as friendly as her. I think he used to tell kids don't touch this and that.

Hey Susan.

Someone already named Ruth's husband: Eli. They were unquestionably the epitome of a 'Mom & Pop' small business although, I always felt Ruth was a phony and her sincerity and affability was exaggerated by the immeasurable irritability of Eli, a/k/a Oscar-The-Grouch.

Yes! 35 cents for pizza! And 5 cents for Bazooka gum. And the movie theatre, a short distance from Mama Lucy's, charged $1.00 for a movie. I miss Gafni's toy store, too. They had the best selection of stuff. Who needs Toys R Us?! The best part of having Main St., 2 blocks from my house, was that I could walk there whenever I wanted, BY MYSELF. What a tremendous freedom to have, as a child. I am too scared to give my own kids the freedom that I had, back in the 1970's. It's a different world, today.

While we revisit our past, let's not forget the (German) Deli. I remember its full name was Two Johns & Tom Delicatessen. Why do I remember this so easily? Our damn little leage (QVAA) made us into walking billboards our first few years. I was cursed with wearing the deli name on my back and then my parents questioned why I wore a jacket in July?! Oh, but how good was their food? About ten years ago, I found myslef driving back to the city during lunch and stopping at the German Deli for a roast beef with Russian on a roll with their amazing macaroni salad. I loved that place.
Also on that block: Nibs (the men's store doubling as a walk-in humidor; yech, the foul stench of cigars); Jerry's Boys Town (clothes for boys, not wayward young men); the shoe store (don't remember the name). To the North, was Gafni's and believe a block further, Green's?
Let's not forget Baskin Robbins where several of us worked.

I remember a store called Deb (Teen?) and there was an A&P there as well. I remember Nibs! My mom would take me there to buy a tie for my dad or my uncle. Baskin Robbins was on the corner, wasn't it? 31 flavors?
