Game We Used to Play

Skully

Wow Skully was the best as a matter of fact a few years ago when my son was a bit younger. On a boring summer day I chalked a skully board in my driveway. Taught him the fine art of melting crayons in beer caps and loading coins in plastic bottle caps. Gave he and a couple of kids from the street a crash course and in no time flat they were playing, laughing, fighting, arguing over the rules and blasting the heck out of each other and having a great time :)

When night fell and it neared 11:00 pm they finally called it quits, would you believe a couple of neighbours and a couple of beers and we played until 2:00 am, in the faint light of the driveway lights.

Now to really appreciate this story, I live in Toronto Canada, where any game other than hockey just does not exist, nobody in Toronto has ever heard of Skully not to mention play it, but for those few rainless days, SKULLY RULED.

Sadly the rains came and washed the board away, a few days later I drew another but by that time the lure of xbox, the internet, msn etc, slowly sucked the kids back indoors, skully was never to be mentioned again :(

I say for the reunion we head over to Vleigh Place Park for a couple of games of Skully.

I remember playing fungo, stickball and baseball in the school yard. I think it was almost every afternoon, or it seemed that way. Also, on my street, 72nd Crescent, my brother Mark, Sheldon and Eric Sterling used to play ball in the street, or we would just throw the ball over the street light and practice chasing high pops.

What a great story, Chris! I don't think I ever played Skully, although I do recall drawing a few hopscotch boards in my time!

Technically, this wasn't a game, but we used to have some awesome crabapple fights in our neighborhood!!! With all the great hiding spots and different courts we could escape to, these "competitions" could last a long time. I was always on the good guys team with Chuck B and Peggy and Kevin H. I won't say who the bad guys were!!!

I used to like playing squash at the 164 playground and handball against the back wall of the school.

Good times!

DOES ANYBODY REMEMBER SAVING YOUR OLD CRAYONS AND THEN MELTING THEM IN THE BOTTLE CAPS. I REMEMBER GETTING THE CAPS AT A DELI ACROSS THE STREET FROM MACORY'S ON KISSENA BLVD THE WAITRESS SAVED THEM FOR ME BECAUSE ME AND MY FAMILY ATE THERE EVERY FRIDAY.................

My brother and I would play skully for hours and hours in Vleigh Place Park and come home with the knees of our jeans and toes of our sneakers worn out. This would drive my mother crazy. She used to complain all the time 'how come you just wear out the toes and the rest of the shoe looks like new?'

I also remember it might have also been called "skelly". There was a skelly diagram at the playground next to Campbell JHS. And let's not forget stoopball.
