Who remembers Mrs. Berman's French songs? I remember two of them. They were called "Qui me passera?" and "Mon Merle Aperdu Une Plume." Did every class have to learn these 2 songs, or was it just the Class of 1975?

Hey Janet.

I just remember singing that (painful) song from the 5th Dimension: Age of Aquarious. Sadly, Mrs. Berman made us translate it. 'Quand la lune...' yeah, is in the seventh house.'
I laughed then but think how much French we learned by the time we reached 7th grade. We breezed through French in Junior High.

OMG! You're absolutely right! I completely forgot about that one! Thanks for reminding me...I think.

Do you remember in 6th grade taking the French Regents and actually passing it two years before we were scheduled to take them?! I think I learned more French from Berman than the three years in Junior High. I remember reading that story about the French monks; they were always eatings oefs (eggs).

Did we really take the Regents?! Hmmm...maybe I do have a vague recollection of this, now. But no recollection of the monk story --sorry. Not to teacher-bash, but, Mrs. Berman had quite a temper, didn't she? I took Spanish throughout JHS and HS. Not because of her temper ;-) Spanish (Yiddish, too) was the language spoken in my home and I wanted to learn it better. Once I got to college, though, I voluntarily took 5 semesters of French. I had always thought of it as a beautiful language, and had always wanted to learn it well. Never thought of this until now, but...maybe it was Mrs. Berman's influence on me, after all?? And she taught art, too, remember? I still have two pictures that I drew in her class.

The majority of our 6th grade class elected to take two-year SP and Spanish. The rest of us in three-year took French. I had three additional years in high school and one in college. By the time I visited Paris on my honeymoon, I remembered plenty of the language and it was wondeful to converse with the locals. As for Mrs. Berman, she was a bitter old woman who took pleasure in 'breaking' our crayons and her temper was indeed, awful.

I often have the french songs in my head when I wake up in the morning-all the words too. But right now I can't remember any except the one about Autumn Leaves -but I can't write them down-it is more a sense memory.
I remember I could hardly wait to be in the grade old enough to learn the harder songs!
We only had French with Mrs. Berman for a year or two -no regents for us!

YES!!!! How could I have forgotten "Autumn Leaves?!" "C'est une chanson, Qui nous ressemble. Toi tu m'aimais, Et je t'aimai. Nous vivions tous, Les deux ensemble, Toi qui m'aimas, Moi qui t'ai mai. Mais la vie....blah, blah... Et la mer effacce sur le sable. Les pas des amants desunis.....

Ellen my dear.

You are correct, the Board of Ed does not administer the Regents Exams in the 6th grade. However, Mrs. Berman obtained copies and offered the class the opportunity to take the test. She graded them and although they did not count towards our 'permanent record' the class of '75 did take the French Regent Exam.

I remember that every year Mrs. Berman had some big French Show in the Auditorium. I only got to take French for one year and that year we got to be part of the show. A few girls from our class dressed up like CanCan Girls and did a dance and then we all stood in a line and Ricky Burns walked by as a Tourist with a camera to take our picture. We (the girls) loved that because we all loved Ricky!!! I also remember a Candle lighting ceremony and I had soaked one of the sticks in water. Then, much to my horror, Alan Resnick - my neighbor- used that stick to TRY and light the candle. Of course it didn't work and I felt horrible. So Alan...if you join this sight....I'm sorry about the stick!!!

Yes!!! Thank you for reminding me of the candle lighting ceremony!!! Gee...did the woman do the same darn thing with every class, every year? No wonder she was the way she was!

There was a french song which was sung in a round -it ended with something like "lama serena" -do you -I know I have the words slightly off -it started with something like "bon soir du salamonder" -beautiful song.
