We sound like a tribute to everything we needed to learn in life.......we learned in Kindergarten! Well..........plus a few years!
All in all, PS 164 was a great place to be. My mom still lives there so there are many great memories that come to mind as I pass it.
I found that it gave me incredible recall..........and can still recite all of them and the preamble to Superman! LOL

I know the documents! And now I teach Constitutional Law. I wonder if there is a connection somewhere? We learned vocabulary, spelling, and Mr. Karrow would test us over the PA system.

How strange is that!
I know that knowing them has been an influence on me, but not as strong as the influence on you*
Mr. Karrow was an innovator and I think we all benefitted from his passion of education.

Having graduated in'66, I just missed the Karrow document routine. But to this day, my sister (10 years older than I) can still recite "Oh Captain, Oh Captain" without missing a beat. My brother (13 years older than I) can rattle off the Gettysburgh Address and the preamble to the Constitution - all these many years later - as if he were still being grilled by Karrow..

I can't remember word for word, but I do remember Mr. Karrow and a lot of the words to the Documents. I work in a Middle School now in Florida and every time l quote what I remember, the kids look at me like I have three heads. They don't know what they are missing. I think we had the BEST education in 164. A school I come to and at least drive by and stop to see each time I am in NY.

Sometimes when I cant fall asleep, I recite the Patrick Henry Speech and go right out!

I too missed the documents all together being in the class of '66.
But I do remember Dr. Karrow coming into Mrs. Riccio's 2nd grade classroom while we were reciting a poem. Now that I am a parent, I can appreciate Dr. Karrow's interest in his students.
When my daughter was in 5th grade (public school in Los Angeles), her teacher gave the class an extra credit assignment to memorize the Preamble to the US Constitution and the Gettysburg Address. Well, about 5 kids did the Preamble and only one did the Gettysburg Address...which is pretty sad. Of course, my daughter had no choice!

Funny --- I was just thinking about this. All these years later (going on 50 since I graduated) I can still recite the entire Gettysburg Address, the Preamble to the Constitution, and the Declaration of Independence. And do you remember working on penmanship? I even won a penmanship award (although you wouldn't believe it to see my handwriting now). Nowadays, they're not even teaching cursive writing in the schools!
