PS 164 Alumni

Who Remembers PS 164's School Song?
I'm pretty sure I do... Here is what I remember... Please, let me know if I am missing any verses, or I missed up on what I have..
"High above the building's 'round us houses by the score, stands the school we all look up to, PS 164.. Education it will teach us, social living too, good americans it will make us, me and you and you..

Yes, in my 6th grade class, taught by Mrs. Sondike, we had a class newspaper called the Stalag Grapevine...written and printed up by students, and a warped version of the school song. I believe it was mainly developed by Mitchell Pilcer. The lyrics went like this:

High above the barbed wire fences,
Down below the dogs.
Stands the place we all throw rocks at,
Stalag 164.

Nazi-ism it will give us,
German tortures too.
Good bad guys it will make us,
You and you and IT.

Lift your bayonets,
Throw your grenades.
Cheer you'll get out the door.
And vomit 'cause you've attended,
Stalag 164.

I don't think any of us really thought the school was bad at all. It was just kind of a schoolkid satire. I'm sure all the former students from my 6th grade class remember it.

Years later, since my wife and son both graduated from Cornell, I realized that our School Song has the Cornell melody: "High above Cayuga's waters..." I wonder if Dr. Karrow went there. (Bless that man's heart: I still know my 'documents' and teach 'em to my own students!)

Dear Sharon,

I'm afraid I've had that song ingrained in my head since elementary school. My wife always thought I was kidding around about the song and then my sister Jackie found this website and sure enough, there was the song! It looks like you are doing well. The last time I saw your brother Jeff was at Heskel's disco in Forest Hills in the early 80's. How's he doing?

Best regards,

Harvey Harris

There was another song, to the tune of "Somewhere over the Rainbow," which began:
one six four, Queens Valley School
of you we're proud.
Ever fond, loving memories
Into our hearts you crowd.

Don't remember verse two, but then the bridge was:

We like your methods and ideals,
Your way of work to us appeals,
That's why we love you.
Our days are filled with happiness,
With joy and laughter we progress,
You are outstanding...

Does anyone remember this one more fully than I?

no, but i don't think Jaoquin Phoenix will be performing that anytime soon on the david letterman show...

but, more seriously, it sounds as if the lyricist was the same who penned the regular 164 theme song "high above the houses by the score" or whatever...

In the 1950's when I attended P.S. 164, the principal was Mr. Karow. He personally taught us the song in auditorium, and told us his wife had written the lyrics.

there was actually 'choreography' that accompanied the original school song. i specifically remember being taught by mrs. bromberg that during the worls "good americans it will make us me and and you and you" that we were supposed to point first to ourselves (the "me)) and then to 2 imaginary points for the 2 "yous." there were other hand-gestures involved with other part of the lyrics which i've forgotten...

the last stanza goes .....

So raise your voices, sing her praises, cheer forever more ... and recall that you've attended PS 164 ....

lift your voices, sing her praises, cheer her evermore
and rejoice that youve attended ps 164
lol
I can still picture Mrs Sondike on Fridays leading us in front of the auditorium

If u saw Dirty Dancing the theme for the Kellerman's song was the same theme as 164 school song.
