Who remembers Mrs. Berman's French songs? I remember two of them. They were called "Qui me passera?" and "Mon Merle Aperdu Une Plume." Did every class have to learn these 2 songs, or was it just the Class of 1975?

Hi, Janet. It's Beth's brother Dan. I only took French with Mrs. Berman in 6th grade. Afterwards, it was Spanish all the way. The 2 songs I remember are the French National Anthem and Napoleon avec cinq cents soldats. I live with my family in Princeton Junction, NJ. Ruben and I have already talked about meeting up when he sees his clients in Princeton.

Hey! Nice to hear from you! You took French only in 6th grade? I guess they changed the program, soon after you left. If I remember correctly, I believe I took French from 3rd to 6th grade...or something like that. Also, Mrs. Berman must have changed her song selection, because we never learned the 2 songs you mentioned. I see, from your bio, that you are an optometrist. Wasn't your dad an optometrist, too, or am I imagining that? How *are* your parents? I remember that your mom's name was Jeanette, but I don't recall your dad's name. I must go, now, and reply to your sister's emails. I was away, for the weekend, looking at colleges with my oldest daughter, and couldn't respond. Hope to see you at the reunion. Shana Tova! ~Janet

Hey, Janet. The reason I only took French in 6th grade is that in 4th and 5th grades, I went to P.S. 219, next to Campbell Junior High. Then we moved to 72nd Ave., and I went to 164 in 6th grade. The odd part is that I had originally gone to 164 from Kindergarten through 3rd grade, even though we lived then near Queens College. Then P.S. 219 was built, and I walked to school for 4th and 5th grades.
Yes, it's true that my dad was an optometrist. My parents are fine. They're living in a retirement community in Delray Beach, FL. You are correct that my mom's name is Jeanette. My dad's name is Irwin, though he's often called Irv. One bit of trivia that I remember (tell me if I'm correct) is that your mother's maiden name was Farber. How I remember that, I truly don't know. Anyway, Shana Tova. .................Dan

Wow. What a confusing history of elementary school attendance! I was searching through the alphabet, in my mind, yesterday, trying out different letters for your dad's first name...but "Irwin" didn't come up! It still doesn't ring a bell. Oh well. lol! At least I remembered his profession, although I have no idea why! I can't believe that you knew my mom's maiden name. It's funny, the things that stick in our heads from childhood! Please tell your folks that I send my regards :-)

I remember two songs in particular. I haven't sung either of these songs since 1972, and the world is a better place because of it! Let's see if YOU remember these little ditties...

The first is "L'Amerique" sung to the tune of "Yellow River".

The second song I recall is entitled "La Seine". The passage that I remembered was as follows...
Elle roucoule, coule, coule
Dès qu'elle entre dans Paris!
Elle s'enroule, roule, roule
Autour de ses quais fleuris!
Elle chante, chante, chante, chante,
Chante le jour et la nuit,
Car la Seine est une amante
Et son amant c'est Paris!
Ahhhh, the internet is an amazing thing...n'est-ce pas?

L"Amerique! That's right! I'd forgotten that one! Thank you so much for bringing back another sweet memory!

I had Mrs. Berman in the 60's, and the songs she was teaching us then was, Dominique, and the French National Anthem!

Interesting. I guess she got bored of the same songs, every year, and tried to alternate them! BTW, I see we share the same maiden name :-)

I remember "mon merle aperdu une plume" as if it was yesterday. Do you remember saying "J'allume c'est bougie...", as we all lit candles? I think it was for a performance in front of the parents.

Don't remember this song at all -- but I now know why Shabbat candles are sometimes called Bougies (but pronounced with a hard g) ... comes from the French. Learn something new every day ...
