The best pizza I ever had was at Mama Lucy's on Main Street. It's been 30 years but I can still taste that pizza and can still see the two guys who used to work there flipping dough over their heads.

Anyone remember their names?
____________

One of my favourite places was the deli on Vleigh Place. Keeping myself supplied with Italian ices, wacky packages and gum used up most of my spending money as a child!

Any fans of the deli here? Do you remember the names of the two guys who ran it? They were there for years and years.
____________

What bits of Flushing trivia do YOU remember?

Post questions and answers here!

I do remember before Baskin Robbins, and even before, before....it was a vacuum store right there on the corner....and where brach's is......(now it owns the entire block on main st)...on that corner was a "fine" linen store, I once went in there with my dad and bought my mom linen napkins for her birthday........Corey, that was when you were a tiny-tiny infant....

it was a vacuum store before Baskin and Robbins (I think)....My mom so very rarely bought me any clothes at Deb Teens....it was expensive, you were lucky you got clothes there....Loved to go to Daffney's...that is a name that I forgot...anyone remember the little card/gift store---MARIE's right next to Willy's candy store---Marie was a pretty lady with gray hair, then a man named Sam took it over. Then, there was a Deli next door to Marie's...his name was Sam and he looked like Oliver Hardy (from Laurel & Hardy)...there were some yummy appetizing going on in that store....the lox, the whitefish, the baked salmon!!!! and then there was Eugene the Butcher!!!!ok Ladies and Gentlemen....that was 76th Avenue and Main Street.....who is next????

hi cindy,
lots of reminiscing of Main Street but how about excursions to Forest Hills? my mother used to shop ($) at Hirschleifers and my father complained how much her outfits were. Our favorite restaurant: Len Hing on Queens Blvd. 2nd fave: La Stella - also Queens Blvd. i left the neighborhood in '65 at 12 yrs old, but believe Queens Blvd/Forest Hills would now be called the 'upscale' shopping compared to Main St. oh yeah...used to get haircuts at The Elliot Shoppe in Forest Hills. when i was 'bad' my mother would threaten to send me back to 'John' at the Vleigh Place. when i balked at getting haircuts because i wanted long hair like The Beatles, my mother would try to persuade me by saying; "President Kennedy gets a haircut every 3 weeks." oh, and Cindy, you don't have to say Oliver Hardy is from Laurel & Hardy. if anyone is too young to know that, well...to bad...

Willy's candy store was on 76 ave & main. they had great egg creams and lime ricky's. it was great going there for hot chocolate on the way going to hebrew school at the jewish center of KGH. No one talked about Moo & Brew, right across from Queens County SB. That was a good place. where else could you get 1 1/2 gallon of milk for .49 cents.
across the street was A&P, then it was Met Food, then something lese, then G&I bakery for Passover and now it's a hardware store.

I lived around the corner from Willy's. What a great place. Hi Corey,
We got the snowstorm... Enjoy the sun.

Willy's was the best! I would be 11-12 years old, go in there and ask Willy for "my Mom's cigarettes". He would say "she smokes Chesterfields" and sell me a pack (they were really for her). Was this a small town or what?
I also remember him yelling at me for trying to sneak a peek at a Playboy type mag he had on his newsstand.
Those were the days!

I remember going to Willy's candy store (76th ave & main st) with $i.50, and coming back home with....a pack of Marlboro (my parents), a lime-ricky soda (for grandma), a double-vanilla ice-cream cone (for me)....and change....now a buck went really far then....and yes THOSE WERE THE DAYS!!!!!

I agree with Deena that Gloria's was the best pizza in all of Flushing -- liquid cheese and tasty sauce. Combine that with a malted at nearby Jahn's (all after seeing a movie at the RKO on Northern Boulevard) and I was in caloric and cinematic heaven.

But in the neighborhood proper, I agree with Andy that Angelo's was better than Mama Lucy's (I know it's sacriligious to say that in my family since we went to Mama Lucy's what seemed like twice a week). Capri was an Angelo's clone ... literally ... it was started by one of Angelo's employees who used the same ingredients and made his pizza the same way.

Mama Lucy once experimented with different ingredients (inferior cheese) and the change in quality was very noticeable -- so much so that my family and others complained, and Nick and Julio reverted to the previous ingredients.

No one has mentioned the Kosher grocery store on Main just south of 72nd Avenue. Baum's I think. The man struggles with a little business throughout the 1960's and early 1970's ... and then comes the influx of Orthodox Jews beginning in the mid-1970's, he expands into the next store, makes oodles of money for a few years and then sells his business and retires. Is this a great country or what? I think he housed the only Glatt Kosher butcher before Brach's and others came in, but I may be, as Roger Clemens would say, misremembering.

I loved the bowties at Cake Box. And the Hebrew National hotdogs next door at Albert's Hebrew National deli.

For us, the big eating treat was going to Marchal's, the diner toward Flushing perhaps 6-8 blocks north of Booth Memorial Hospital. But my favorite eating memory was going to the White Castle on Union Turnpike across from the St. John's campus. Every time I travel to NY I must fine a White Castle -- I can taste those grilled onions!

Next to the "hidden" Regency Lanes entrance was a barbershop, run by Paul. But I think for bowling I went as often to JIB Lanes on Parsons and Jewel.

Bowties! That's the name I couldn't remember! Thanks! And White Castle....mmmmmm..... my favorite!

wowow---Marchal's diner....used to be a monthly Sunday morning outing-- my dad would take my brother, Corey and me out for breakfast....and then, for the main event---THE CAR-WASH...now that was living!!!! That way, by taking the two kids out for about 2 hours, gave our mom time for herself.....

I still compare any pizza place to Mama Lucy's and they'll always be the best!! Nothing even comes close...It has become a falafal place and Baskin Robbins changed a million times since way back when. The only thing that stayed the "same" is the movie theater, but can you believe that they turned it into a multiplex theater? No more BALCONY!!!
The deli on Vleigh Place made the best tuna heros!
