PS 164 Alumni

We all are well aware of Mrs Simon's claim to fame but are there more alumni who have gone on to greatness?

I for one know Stanley Eisen (Paul Stanley of KISS) was a graduate. My uncle told me he went to 164 with him and they were good friends, I remember Mr. Ricca verified this for me. Stanley later went on to Parsons JHS I believe.

Anybody else?

Wow, Chris, I had no idea about Paul Stanley being a PS 164 alumnus!!! I was such a big KISS fan back in the '70s. I found this link where someone mentions going to 164 with Paul (towards the bottom of the page): http://www.kissfaq.com/news/1103.html That would make him about Class of '64, if he graduated from there.

Well, in addition to Paul Simon, there was Art Garfunkel. He is in this class picture: http://www.patriciaweppler.com/ps164_1953.htm I heard from his website rep last year and Art knows about my tribute site for 164. (I was hoping Art would send me an email to post!)

My next door neighbor was a very nice boy named Peter Jacobson, who went on to marry Fran Drescher and they created "The Nanny" tv show back in the '90s. Peter played piano for some of the school plays and he was an usher at the movie theater on Main Street. I have looked for Peter online to let him know about the 164 tribute site, but I never found an email address for him. His professional name is Peter Marc Jacobson and I think he would be Class of 1970.

Great post, Chris!

Hello Carol.

My family knew the Jacobsons well; my father was his piano teacher. I emailed Mr. Jacobson earlier and he was kind enough to reply.

Best,

hi,
we lived directly across the street from The Jacobsons until we moved to 137th street in '55. my parents continued to be friendly with them. i have to look up what grade you are in/whether you would know them, but, the main people who hung out on the stoop together there were: The Jacobsons, my parents, The Gilberts (Abby Gilbert's parents; class of '64) and Eddie and Evelyn Moses.

I THINK THAT PAUL STANLEY (STANLEY EISMAN) WAS TWO OR THREE YEARS AHEAD OF ME) - I ONCE SPOKE ON HOWARD STERN'S OLD RADIO SHOW, TOLD HIM THAT HE WAS FROM OUR "HOOD", ALSO HIS MOM USED TO BUY STRUDEL AND KNISHES FROM MY GRANDMA!!!! I ALSO REMEMBER THAT PAUL SIMON'S MOM (DEAR, BELLE) WHO WAS MY FIRST GRADE TEACHER ALWAYS HAD BROTHER EDDIE TO COME AND PERFORM FOR US IN SCHOOL, EDDIE WAS VERY TALENTED. ANOTHER LITTLE NOTE.....ART GARFUNKELS COUSIN IS THE "BLIMP---LOVER" HIMSELF, LOUIS PERLMAN FORMERLY FROM MITCHELL GARDENS, FLUSHING, NEW YORK, AS WELL AS FROM THE BAY CLUB OF BAYSIDE, NEW YORK---HE WAS A MANAGER FOR SOME OF THE FAMOUS "BOY" MUSIC GROUPS, I THINK THE BACKSTREET BOYZ---DO NOT QUOTE ME.....

patricia,
my family was good friends with The Jacobsons. Peter was an only child and his parents were Eddie and Pat. My mother attended the wedding in of Fran and Peter. Peter was officially friends with my sister and attended all her birthday parties (have pics)

Also...Eddie (father) was in business with my father (somewhat). My father worked with Tensor (lamps) and Eddie was a distributor. could probably get peter's address from my mother - she was friendly with his mother like forever.

obviously you lived in the apartments one block from 164. We originally lived across the street from The Jacobsons, but moved into a private house on 137th in 1956.

regards,
peter

Hi Peter,

Peter Jacobson is a member of the site, class of '69. (Linked off the main page.)

I remember those Tensor lamps!!! I had one clipped to the headboard of my bed for years.

Yes, I lived in an apt on that block for 13 years (1964 to 1977.) The Jacobsons were our next door neighbors. I can still remember sitting at my desk hearing Peter play piano. (My bedroom wall was also their living room wall.)

Enjoy the site!

:-) Patricia

patricia,
my father was the founder, president and inventor of The Tensor Lamp. When he got back from a business trip from London in 1964 he said to my mother: "My distributor (for Tensor) in London is living better than we are; we have to move to Great Neck!" It was all downhill after that...(not sure if this is going right onto the thread of the "Famous Alumni" discussion or directly to Patrica Weppler, but it is a reply for Patricia - not sure anyone else would be interested...

Peter.
I didn't know what a Tensor Lamp was so I had to look it up. Maybe it came out after I left NY (or too young to remember), but I had a similar desk lamp at home in Tokyo. It may have been the licensed Japanese version. Anyway, you mentioned your father invented the Tensor Lamp...but I read he was also a GREAT inventor !!! ( metal tennis racket, electric pencil sharpener, an early telephone answering machine, a disposable flashlight, etc.) He was WAY ahead of his time.

Yumiko,
tell me how to see if someone replies to any of these discussions, because the only way I know is if i scroll all around and happen to see. sure i'm missing some people talking and replying. The Tensor Lamp was a fairly well-known (by the mid-60's) consumer electronics item. the company was very successful, and my father was regularly quoted and profiled in The New York Times, etc. he moved us out of Kew Garden Hills because he got a little too carried away, thinking we should live better. he bought a house on teh water/Long Island Sound, and things never were as good again (i.e. living in Kew Garden HIlls). oh, btw, my father invented the first american telephone answering machine, but, typically, did not market or patent it well.
