The 5 & 10 was Park Variety. Then we had Dottie's, Hollywood Cleaners, the dress store, Barry's Laundry and Jack the shoemaker. and don't forget the barber
with the horse chair for us little kids.

Hi Bonnie - Hey there Peter!

Just a quick two cents (or soda bottle): do either of you remember Ben Turtletaub? He worked at Key Food for years, generally stocking shelves, as I recall, though he was middle aged at least. He was also the first gay person I ever knew as such. This was in the 60's. He didn't advertise it, but he didn't hide it either.

He patronized Rocco's now and then, and occasionally got a hard time from some drunk. But my mother and some other women patrons of Key Food and Rocco's were friendly with him, inside and outside the store, and I remember hearing how they'd shouted a guy down for him one time. He was embarrassingly friendly to me ever after. But he was a good man, and a brave one.

Interesting to hear that the whole block became a school for special needs. Thanks for relating that, Bonnie. I lived right across the street, where 141st ran into Vleigh, next to Dr. Shankman.

Sorry, Rick. I don't remember Ben. I do, however, remember Dr. Shankman. Dreaded those house calls!

Rick - don't remember Ben.  Remember the fruit and vegetable guy (think Italian) and a guy maybe by the name of Sid who worked the register and he might have doubled behind the butcher counter.  I loved going to Key Food as a kid.  Think I might have told you the barber, John (think name of shop was "John's Barber Shop" lost is from gambling on the horses.  He was Italian and my barber of choice - different other barbers worked for him - an occasional mean one.

-peace-out - Peter...

What incredible memories! There was the Chinese laundry where we had shirts done, Key Food where all the cashiers knew you and your family and would let you buy what your mother sent you for without paying and they put your name on a slip at the register. The butcher was named Sol Locasio and his son Sid worked there too (until he went into the travel business). I also remember a TV repair place in the alcove between Key Food and the other luncheonette (next to the 5 & 10). I have driven by there in the past few years when I have been in NY and can picture it like it was -with very fond memories.

Hey Mitch, what about Bill's Deli? Your brother Paul?

Dennis how have you been? Paul lives out in California near San Francisco. Richie still lives in Queens off Union Tpke. My Mom still lives in the same apartment on 79th. So what have you been up to? Vleigh has changed big time, but I can close my eyes and see the one we grew up around.

I remember Vleigh Place well...the candy store, the 5 & 10, the liquor store, and of course the dress shop. My mother had the dress shop there for many years where some of the teachers shopped. Her star salesperson was Adele Adler, who lived up the street, and eventually took over the store. I'm assuming it was her son Mitchell who is recalled in this blog. I've stayed in took with Adele after she, her husband, and Mitchell moved out West. In fact, Mitchell's daughter joined me and my family for a Mother's Day lunch in recent years. Both Adele, and her grandaughter speak proudly of Mitchell's success.

In addition, as I recall across from Dottie's was Sol and Sy's Candy store. There was a butcher, there was a TV repair store, took guitar lessons at Trudy and Bill's dance studio, the Key food. Passed by Vleigh Place the other day taking a short cut to Queens Blvd and don't know what it turned into after it was the Bd of Elections.

After the Board of Elections, that whole block became a school for children with special needs.

My mom and I both remember shopping at Frieda Polonyi's shop. Believe it or not, I still can picture some of the dresses that I bought. (I even remember before she opened the store she sold dresses from your house.) Those were lovely times and my mother will be delighted to know that you are on this site.
