PS 164 Alumni

The 5 & 10 was Park Variety. Then we had Dottie's, Hollywood Cleaners, the dress store, Barry's Laundry and Jack the shoemaker. and don't forget the barber
with the horse chair for us little kids.

Hey Chris:
That's right, HAROLDS!!, he was defintely a grumpy old man... What was his wifes name?? Do you remember the Liquour Store next door??? I remember when I turned 18, the owner (forget his name also) gave me a free bottle of wine (whoppee!!)... What about "Norden Drugstore? Remember that?? I too remember going to Mamma Lucy for Lunch (they let us out PS 164 for lunch???). For $1.00, I could buy 2-slices, a coke, and then go next door to Baskin-Robbins and buy an Ice Cream Cone... Those were the days...
Now, the MAIN STREE MOVIES, that was great to have a movie theatre in the neighborhood. Does anybody remember what movies they first saw there??

Back in '56, I remember seeing at least a half dozen cartoons one Saturday afternoon, the last being "Rabbitson Crusoe" with Bugs Bunny, Yosemite Sam and Dopey Dick, the Sam-eating shark. That was the setup for the feature film - Moby Dick, with Gregory Peck as Ahab. That Dopey Dick/Moby Dick segue was a nice touch. Memorable cinema-ship. If I remember correctly, it was a quarter for the Saturday matinee back then.

I saw the 3 Stooges meet Snow White, or something like that with my brother Alan.

Later on when I was in high school, Peter Jacobson and Dayna Schwartz used to work there.

The Baskin Robbins wasn't originally there, I'm trying to remember what was there before the baskin robbins- it was a big deal when they put the ice cream place there, although it was bad for Edna the Polar Cub lady.

That was Snow White and the Three Stooges.
I went to see that too at the Main Street Cinema.

Wasn't Jenny Chin's family's Dry Cleaners on Main St. as well?
Or near there?

There was a girl that worked at the Baskin Robbins in its early days named Randy.....short blonde hair.....anuone remember her ?

Sharon,
There was a matinee Saturday for kids. Was either 50 cents but maybe even 25. Me and my friend Barry Wertheim saw all the adult movies there on weekends: "Ben Hur" (re-release in '63) "The Great Escape," "West Side Story." My mother took me to "Hard Days Night."

The Matinees had "matrons" (older women in white uniforms w/flashlights) patrolling the aisles. during some of the monster movies the kids would be too rambuctious and would be thrown out by them.

I spent a lot of time in Rocco's and have fond memories of Sunday softball in the park. I read through all these comments regarding the stores and restaurants we spent so much time in, what a blast!

I hear the Randazzo brothers now own the bar...

Hi Cindy,
Dottie's husband was Nat. There was also Hollywood Cleaners, which Joey Polaks parents owned. Then the liquor store, barber shop, pizza place, Rocco's, the deli, beauty parlor and the drug store. The other side was Park Variety, a candy store, jack the shoemaker. the TV repair shop and Barrys Laundry.
I think you went to 164 with my older brother Paul.
Delete
oops, you're right, it was Nat. Yes I was friendly with your brother Paul but I think he's
a year or two older than me. I graduated from high school in '69.
Do you remember Clarence, the park attendant at the Vleigh Place Park?
Delete
Yes I do. Remember in the summer they would have a young guy or girl
help Clarence and would try to get us to play hopscotch of dodge ball. But all we wanted to do was play skully or softball.
But anyway how have you been? Didn't you live on the corner of Union Tpke & 141st.
Delete
We lived at 135-31 78th Rd, on the opposite side of the park from where you lived.
If you go down "Suicide Hill", which really isn't so steep or death defying as it once seemed, and cross the street, that was our block - just above Park Drive East. I was there about a year ago and most of the houses have been completely remodelled, but for some reason, mine is the same. Mrs Hoffman (PS 164 teacher) lived next door.
Whatever happened to the Murphies- Bob, Terry, Sandy and another sister?
Delete
I think Bob moved out to Long Island I think he married Joey LaBrunos
sister. The others I don't know. I knew that Terry came back from Vietnam all messed up. I go back once in awhile to visit my Mom. She still lives in the same apartment on 79th Avenue. She refuses to move anywhere else. I was going to try and visit 164 my next time up. Do you think they would let me walk around.
