my sister was peter jacobson's friend and he came to her b'day parties at our house. eddie jacobson was in business w/my father and my mother was friends w/pat. they both came to my bar mitzvah. and yes, that is an excellent photo - the light in Kew Garden Hills in that era was distinctive. shot before they built the Van Wyck.

Hello Peter,
What a wonderful photo of Park Drive East. I was best buddies with Peter Jacobson back in the day. We were actually class of '69 but after 40 years, what's a year. Still in touch with him. I too left the streets of NYC for a more small town rural life. Thanks for the black and white memories. I spent a lot of time down on the drive.

Just a note on that shortcut to Park Drive East - I remember sledding that a lot in the winters. It was scary, because you'd shoot out into the road pretty much blind to traffic. Made it interesting.

WOWOWOWOW!!! or should I say... OYE VAY!!!!! A picture is worth 1,000 words...I believe we all walked that walk, your family looks great!!!! The car, the lamp-post, that was something....Thanks for the walk back in time, PETER....and yes, I knew the shortcut, there was many a kiss planted on my lips (when I was older, of course). THOSE WERE THE DAYS, MY FRIENDS!!!!!

Click on the Photos section at the top of the page and go to Page 6. Towards the bottom there are pictures posted by Lois Sclafani of the present Park Drive East. What a big change from when your photo was taken. It is sad though... The skyline in the background looks the same but the expressway definitely doesn't need to be there. There is also a picture of the corner of 137th St. and 76th Rd,. that would be around the front entrance of the school. Gosh, this makes me want to go back and revisit the old neighborhood!

Oh yes, I LOVED that show. I never liked the remake of it. I feel the essence of the show was totally lost (like most remakes are). I did rent the entire series on Netflix about a year ago. It was great. It was a big disappointment when they canceled the show before the two scientists ever got back. I always enjoyed history, but it made me more curious about whatever era Tony and Doug were sent to.

Love this picture as it shows how quiet it was back then in the neighborhood.
I too have been to the park a few times with my mother, but never seemed to be busy...Good thing you had the crutches to fight off the guy, Nancy. That must have been scary. And thank you again, Peter, for jogging my memory of the short cut. Hope I can remember more about those days...wish I could go back in time (via the time tunnel?) and relive those days. They were fun!

...and, the pic was taken by Eddie Jacobson, my father's friend. Eddie Jacobson's son, Peter is a 164 alumnii, and, if you've been following the site, would know his ex-wife is Fran Drescher. My mother went to the Jacobson-Drescher wedding.
i envy you spending teenage yeas in Kew Garden Hills and having "crazy-day" going to Northern Blvd., etc. i was not allowed to ride my bicycle past the boundaries of Main Street/Jewell Ave/Union Turnpike/Park Drive East until age 12. and, yes, i remember i would occasionally get my handlebars stuck on the fence of the "short-cut."

in my crazy days, i used to ride my bike thru flushing meadow to northern blvd to get into manhattan. getting thru the "short cut" was hard on a bike because it was so narrow. i showed my friends from 2nd grade this picture and they got a real kick out of it. Thanks for posting it.
