Various Gym Activities

Hi All...I was thinking of all the different things we did in Gym as kids. Dodgeball, Steal the eraser, Red Rover etc.. I also remember doing excersises. I added the Chicken Fat song to my page if anyone wants to hear it for Old Times sake!! It's a riot!! I remember doing square dances and Blue Bird, Blue Bird, Through my Window. I even remember "I'm going to Kentucky, I'm going to the Fair". But does anyone remember the dance we did to Oriental music (Japanese??) where you acted out using a shovel to dig and then throw the dirt over your shoulders and the swirling your arms around in a big circle??? You stood in a big circle and the dance had the class do all these motions while walking in a circle! Can anyone Help ease my mind?? If not...what other Gym activities do you remember??

I remember the Chicken Fat song all too well!

We played a game where we all grabbed the edge of a parachute, raised it up in the air, then the teacher would call things out and if you had that thing you ran under the chute. That was a fun game.

We learned square dancing, which was confusing! And dodgeball! I didn't like that. I remember one time the ball hit me right in the middle of my stomach and everyone thought I'd blocked it on purpose. (Of course, that wasn't my intention - I was too busy talking to Annette Irizarry and didn't see the ball coming, otherwise I would have made sure to get out of the way!!)

Hi Helen! My sister Mary and I still try to remember all the words to the Asian song. Don't laugh - it goes something like this....typed phonetically:
singin hai, aloetta, something something da di da
a yoy yoy

sorry - got the tune - it rings in our heads
perhaps someone else can fill in some gaps.

I am so happy you remembered this!

The things you find on YouTube...The first is just for the music and the main song ends in about 1 minute so you can leave after that...the second shows the rest...After viewing just click the Back Arrow to get back here!!

Hi Helen,

WOW! Where did you find the Chicken Fat song? I got chills hearing it again after all these years. It was released in 1961, so it was new when I was at P.S.164. I can't believe they were still using it in the late 70's! I wonder if any one after your class remembers it. Maybe they still use it!

Hi Harold

I'm glad you "enjoyed" the Chicken Fat song. I actually just stumbled across it! As for classes after mine using it, I know my sister's class used it and she was the class of '80. Did you see my Discussion on Peggy Grant? We had a Peggy Grant Day where we did square dances & folk dances and even the Chicken Fat song. I posted the Program in that discussion but I don't remember who Peggy Grant was? Do you? In the program it talked about her a little, I got the impression that maybe she worked at the school....Anyway, glad I could give you a flashback!!
