I started to write this as a reply to someone else's post, but since bikes are so important to kids, thought I'd start a new topic for it.
My favorite bike was my sparkly blue banana seat with the high-rise handlebars that I got in the early '70s. I LOVED THAT BIKE!!! I had all sorts of gadgets for it - a headlight, a bell, sometimes a basket on the front or streamers on the bars. I loved the noise when I had a playing card in the spokes of my wheels. I felt so cool!
My bike was so important to me. I loved doing tricks with it and being able to zoom in and out of all the courts, ringing my bell as I flew down the sidewalk. I loved flying down 78th Road to Park Drive East (but did not like pedaling up 77th Avenue) to get back home!
I used to take that bike everywhere. When we went visiting on Long Island or when we went away on vacation, my dad would take the bike apart, pop it in the trunk, then reassemble it when we arrived at our destination. Summers had me riding my bike all over Orient Point, Massapequa and wherever else we ended up.
When I was about 11, I was finally old enough to go for rides down to Flushing Meadows Park with my friend Peggy Hughes. I remember how grown up I felt finally being able to do that.
When I graduated to a 10 speed bike I thought that would be awesome, but I never liked it as much as my little banana seat bike.
Hey, if the price of gas keeps going up, we might be looking for our old bikes again!!!
