OK, Harold, I am in "the loop." I had dinner with Ricky (only call him Rick to his face now) and he reminded me of my negligence.
It is good to read you are doing well. I am still happy in Lawrence, KS, and it has been 36 years. After being a city planning consultant then a computer company owner, I sculpt and sell stone sculpting supplies. Life follows strange paths.
I got divorced in 2001 ("separate ways") and happily remarried earlier this year to a friend of 20 years. We bought a nice home in town and I work at my studio during the days. Oh yeah, I sold the blue Impala and now drive a Nissan Rouge and a GMC diesel truck. The latter is for hauling all the stone.
And yes the big birthday is coming up for both of us in March. This is the first time I cared about it. My Dad passed away this Sept. and now I am thinking of the time left - getting that bucket list together.
Rick is talking about getting together in Manhattan on March 24th with others from our class. You might check your calendar. I think I am going to fly in. Do tell others!!

Hi Harold--I also just went on the site after about a year. My husband and I met doing Fiddler on the Roof at Hofstra--he is a teacher but also a professional actor, singer and piano player. Our children are quite talented but only as a hobby--our daughter is a Bio teacher with two babies and our son is a law student. I remember PS 164 with such fondness--it was a great experience. I hadn't heard from anyone in years-until this site-where I reconnected with Ruth-Ellen. My email address is backdoc88@yahoo.com if you want to chat more. Abby

HI Harold,
The last message didn't go through but I just wanted to say hello. I had seen your Dad right before he passed away. He visited my parents frequently. I remember both of your folks so well......great people.
I wrote to Marty and I know that he and David are still close friends. I have been friends with Ruth-Ellen since back then, and also been in touch with Karen Gang.
Since this website, I have been in touch with Rick Ginsberg and Myles Schacter, catching up. So many years, so many people.
I see you have horses now- and if u recall, I rode for many years-even through out our college years!
It's so nostalgic to see the pictures that you and Marty have.....I have class pictures and I also have the the autograph album from our graduation year in which just about everyone signed and drew in.
I hope this message finds you and your family well,
Deb
How nice of you! You may recall that the 10th is also Myles Schacter's birthday, and as you know, he lives in town (when he isn't traveling). We actually run in some similar circles and have spent some time together. Very nice man, and thank you for putting me on to him. He leads a group of long time Lawrence natives who do international dinners each month at different homes and that has been a blast to be a part of.
So, as my multiple attempts at responding to you this morning prove, old age does have its impact (sorry, I don't know why all the empty responses??!!). I did hear from Don Reichman yesterday as well. It is amazing how certain dates just stick in your head - like March 7th and Harold Schiff.
Interesting time to be an administrator at a public university, but I suppose all sectors of industry face much the same these days (Michigan I hear is really reeling). Hope all is well in your world. My present to myself for this 57th year is that I am having my wife and younger kids (ages 8 and 11) join me on a business trip to Washington DC next week where we'll spend four extra days doing the nation's capital. Should be fun. I have an older boy who works in politics who gave up a lucrative job out in Denver to work on the hill, so we get to see him as well. He's only 23 but has amassed quite a resume since graduating from Boulder a few years ago. Most of our age cohort were so much more place-bound than kids today -- of course, you and I and a few others are the exceptions that prove that rule.
Let's see, where were we the last time we spoke....35 years ago? I just stumbled on this website and had to touch base with you. We had some common friends and played touch football in front of Robert Farkas' house. Do you have any contact with Arvin Mirow, Eric London or Steven Resnick? I remember Michael Berne (sp?) who I believe was killed by a jealous husband. There was also a younger, red-haired kid with whom I had a garage band that lived right near you. Any of this ring a bell?
Hey, Harold. I was actually in Troop 109 at the JCKGH. I had forgotten the #. Thanks for reminding me. Do you practice solo or with partners? At the present time, I'm in the process of changing the name of my office....racking my brains. I am a solo practicioner, but have been part of a business co-op in which we share a common name, Eyesfirst Vision Center, and do group advertising, but all offices are independently owned. But I'm breaking away from the group. I could swear it was a pool table, but I'll take your word for it.
Hello, Harold. You don't know me, but after seeing some of your photos, and the photo of your house, it jogged some old memories. I think I may have visited your house years ago when I was 12 or 13. Did you have a big pool table in your basement? I may have known your brother Martin through friends of mine (possibly they were in the Boy Scouts). Also, was your father an optometrist named Irvin Schiff? I have some memories of shooting pool in your basement. Tell me if I could possibly be correct.
Here's the coincidence.....I went to SUNY Buffalo (grad'd 1978), and I went to Illinois College of Optometry (grad'd 1983). My father's a retired O.D. and his first name is Irwin. I have my own optometric practice in Iselin, NJ.
Hi there, Howard---MEMORIES, I just got around to reading more of the alumni pages...My Grandma (may she rest in peace) baked a nd sold strudel, knishes, and other Jewish goodies to people in the neighborhood, one of which was Stanley Eisman's mom...So funny, I had an XXXXhusband, Donny Schiowitz (went to 154, Parsons and Bowne)--he too played the drums, with Stanley, and Louis Perlman and Art Garfunkel once upon a time at the battle of the bands at Queens College---I was 2 or 3 yrs behind Stanley at 164....wowowow lots of memories, thanks for adding yours!!! Love the pictures you put up----especially the program to graduation!!!Take care--regards, Cindy
harold,
i just took a look at the photos of your current life and was blown away by the first one with your son -- he is a dead ringer for you at that age! i would recognize him instantly! i was happy to hear about your costco connection; it sounds like a great thing.
i wish someone would organize a reunion for our class. alas, it won't be me!
I've been meaning to write you to tell you that through your input I got the opportunity to meet Myles again after a hiatus of a mere 40-45 years. He looked exactly the same! It turns out that we have a good number of mutual friends here in Lawrence - not surprising given the nature of this community. He had a small Passover cedar at his incredible house just outside of town (apparently he built it himself), so my family joined him and about 15 of his friends. It was a hoot.
So now I need to ask - who else do you know living in Lawrence from the old neighborhood!
Hey, thanks. Just another example of the incredible power of the internet...
Don Reichman just put me on to this website. I was in NYC this week and a bunch of us got together in the Village - Don, Jeff Schwartz, Elliott Levine and Jeff Marcus (a year behind us), my kid brother Lanny, Mitch Schorr (a few years ahead of us at 164) and two friends from Parsons (Stu Frankel and Stu Alperin). None of us have stayed real close (in fact I hadn't seen a few of these guys for over 30 years), but the past few years some of us have tried to get together when I'm in town. I'm currently a professor and Dean at the University of Kansas - have moved around a bit in my career. I still remember you and your famuily, you dad's office in the attached house down Vleigh Place. And if my memory serves me correctly, you just had a birthday on March 7th (an older man, as I wasn't born until March 10th).
Seeing names like yours, Ruth Ellen Pearlman, Neal Teeman, all the Koppelmans (whose parents have been in touch in recent years), really brings back some memories. Can't say that I miss NY all that much (nice place to visit, but....), though in many ways we had such an idyllic little neighborhood and upbringing. Either that, or we'll all just getting old! Anyway, hope to hear from some of you.
I enjoyed looking at the programs for your graduation and school play. We also sang "No Man is An Island" in 1976 so it must have been a school staple! How wonderful that you saved all these treasures!
Great to see the pictures of the neighborhood buildings.
I didn't realize you were in Joel's class. Neil and Joel used to come over to my place...they liked to play with my dolls!
Way back in the late 70's when KISS was in Japan, I met the band at the hotel with the Japanese record company rep. I was an interpreter then. One girl who came to interview Paul mentioned she went to high school in Forest Hills, but he didn't show any interest...therefore I did not even mention Kew Garden Hills or P. S. 164. If I knew then what know now...ah well...but small world.
I was in the graduating class of 64. I was also in the Cub Scouts troop 199. I'm friends with Les Goodman, Alvin Lewis, and I knew your parents because your grandmother was a client of mine when I worked for the NY Foundation for Senior Citizens Minor Health and Safety Repair Program. I did many repairs in her house for her in her later years and that's how I met your parents who also became clients of mine.
I was also friends with Stanley Loppian as well as Louie Wasserzug.
I also know someone who worked with your father at the college.
The last time I saw your parents and grandmother was sometime in 1999 at Harry's Restaurant on 108th Street.
Hi Harold,
My brother Paul is a dentist and living in Jericho, L.I. His son is 26 and is graduating from U.Penn Dental. His daughter is 24 and in medical school on L.I. My Dad was very active in the Boy Scouts and Little League. He is 87 and still working as an accountant. My Mom is also alive and doing well. They have been living in Bay Terrace for many years. Ken
Hi Harold, You do not know me (I graduated in 1973) but I just wanted to thank you for putting all the pictures on the site. My parents moved from 77th Ave., just down the block from PS164 to Bay Terrace 12 years ago. I always visited the old neighborhood at least once a year after they moved. My parents both past away (one two years ago and one three years ago) and I have found it very difficult to go back. Your pictures brought back such wonderful memories. Thank you again. Lynne
Hi Harold,
I don't know if you remember me but you were in my brother Paul's year. I was more friendly with your brother Martin. When I saw your picture with Bobby Farkas I recognized both of you. I was good friends with his sister Kathy. Welcome aboard.
