Dear Dorothy: I was sad to learn that this website will be closing down soon. It's funny--I rarely use it, as you realize, but now that it is ending, I feel really sad. I wonder if our classmates might want to share email addresses as a group, so that we can maintain contact, even if only in our dreams. Should we encourage people to do this? What do you think?
Wow, so nice to hear from you. I'd love to speak with you. Please call me at 856-234-3969....if u feel like it.
In many ways it feels like yesterday; is it me or do you agree we were much more mature than the kids today. Seems we've both have had colorful and interesting lives & since the advent of the blow dryer my hair is long and straight (thank God.)
Engaged twice, I never married but I did very well in business, BFD. Let's connect, okay?
xo
Hi Dorothy,
I doubt it if you'll remember me. I was Ricki then, a nickname my father gave me. When I finished high school it was time to drop Ricki and use my given name...hence Rebecca.
I too admired you, your voice and the way you carried yourself. We were kids but very mature compared to the kids today.
I became a first time mom at age 49 when I adopted a newborn, Zachary who is now 17, I've had a colorful career, landed in I.T. without a Master's Degree and owned a computer consulting firm.
When I think of those early days I'm reminded how simple and easy life was. My heart breaks for my son and his generation. We may have ducked under our desks (which was scary enough,) but this generation must live with terrorism and nightly news that is often horrific.
Well, time for me to shut up. It would be wonderful to hear back from you. At the very least would you tell me the name of your album...I'd love to buy it and hear your beautiful, powerful voice again. Be well and keep singing!!
Ricki.....
HI Dorothy - I remember your name. I also went to Parsons and then to Jamaica - and Queens College. Where did you live? I lived on 78th Road and Main Street. Have an older sister Betsy. My email address is shametro@aol.com. It's easier to communicate.
Hi Dorothy,
I remember you with your black hair, beautiful voice and smile, and amazing stage presence. I had Mrs. Bromberg in the 5th grade and remember her playing, "The Flower Drum Song" on the record player as we did our work.
I was a in the Glee Club and had solos, but no starring roles. I don't know if you remember me. I was a quiet little girl. I now deliver training workshops, so I've overcome my shyness!
I'm married for 41 years, have 2 sons--38 and 35, and 3 grandsons.
I'd love to reconnect with some of our fellow classmates.
Thank you for your sweet remarks.
If there is a way that you could post the photos from the "King and I" (or "My Fair Lady") productions on this website, I would love to see them. Great nostalgia there. (And laughs, too, I'm sure.)
Keep singing, Dottie

And I could wish my days to be

Dear Dottie,
When my sister Barbara recently located the "P.S.164 Facebook" site, I was flabbergasted to read up on my old chums' remarkable histories. I'm not real surprised that so many have done so well since I thought we were a pretty bright group, all in all. Or perhaps they put something in the water fountains. . .
We were in kindergarten together and in the 5th. & 6th. grade Glee Club. I could kind of carry a tune, so Mrs. Bromberg put me in the chorus where I wouldn't do much damage. But your star gleamed even then and I was amazed at the power & control of your voice, at such a young age. It seemed effortless. I'd love to hear that album you produced way back when...
And I remember you as friendly with an open smile & since I was a pretty shy kid, I admired that.
I was the one to tell Gil Gross about the site. We reconnected recently, had a wonderful time reminiscing last month (your name came up among many others.) It's easy to give him high marks; he's a talented & gracious guy. And VERY funny.
I'm very close to my twin Barbara & I do think, when next you come to our coast, we should have a mini- reunion.
Bonnie
Dottie...Thank you for your kind words. I wasn't always the happiest kid back then and your words were sweet to hear even all these years later. I'm not sure which class it was or whether it was just the fact that 164 was a small school and pretty much all knew one another in some way or another. My teachers were 1: Mrs. Simon 2: The Miss Schmidt who later married 3: Mrs Bromberg 4: Klein 5: Bromberg again and 6th Reppa but we even could have known one another from Ballad for Americans [remember when we all took part in that?]. Whatever it was I remember you too. There were some who you could tell through their eyes, Sue Ford was another, Bonnie & Barbara....who just "saw" more as they looked about. It's funny what stays with you. I too have one son and he is also, for whatever accomplishments I've had, what I will grace the world with upon my departure. He has a gracious heart and a noble soul. Isn't it odd the least "unique" thing we may do on this earth, raising a child, may turn out to be the thing we most hope to be remembered for. If life ever brings you out this way again please get in touch. I've reunited with the Lucas sisters who I also did not know that well at PS164. They both live here. Belle Simon and I stayed in touch until she passed away just a couple of years ago. There''s a part of us that has taken the years within the walls of 164 with us. It's nice to be able to again share that with someone.
Gil
Dorothy. Hi. You probably don't remember me, but for whatever reason I remember you well. Some years back I was at King Karol, the record store on 42nd street, and I saw an album by Dorothy Lerner and the cover looked like you. For some reason I didn't get it that day and though I've regretted that and wondered if it was you, when I've looked on line I've never seen it again. I take it from your bio that WAS you and now I regret not getting it all the more. I hope this finds you happy and I still haven't given up hope of tracking down that album.
Gil Gross
Hi Dorothy!
I had a chance to walk through our street when I went to the Reunion the other day. Please check out the photos on my page...Not sure if I identified your house correctly...The street seemed run down compared to our days. And there were so many cars! Of course, those home probably have only aone car garage so everyone has to park on the street. It makes the street look so much smaller. Our house had been torn down but nothing is being done yet. It was sad not to be able to see it. I have so many good memories from those days.
Hope you enjoy the photos!
Yumiko
Hi Dottie -- It was so nice to hear from you. Sounds like we are all on the same page -- literally and figuratively -- to have a mini reunion in NYC spring. Would love to have Linda and Paul join us if they can too. I know Jane would be happy to hear from you whenever you have a chance to be in touch. We all have busy lives with things moving to the back burner for a while. You have a great memory -- remembering that I was in education. Sounds like you are doing some very fine work. When I think of you, I always think about your music and your wonderful voice, and I feel like you were also very artistic -- do I have that right? We certainly had what felt like rather elaborate musical productions back then -- great times and great memories. Do you remember square dancing and Maypoles and Arbor Day planting trees in the courtyard? And classroom parties for seemingly every holiday! Great memories! All the best-- Janet
Hi, Dottie: I am so glad to hear back from you. I got in touch with Janet and Linda also. Maybe we could do a mini reunion this spring!
Your instincts were right about me--I was headed for a career in the arts in some form, and I did major in English at Barnard, but then I decided to try Med School, and liked it a lot. Strangely, I got interested in surgery, but ultimately felt that the physical and time demands were just too much. So I went into psychiatry and psychoanalysis, which were perfect. It's like there is a medicine tree and a humanities tree, and the branch of medicine I am in stretches out and touches the branches of the humanities tree, and bears fruit! (I guess that description should convince you that I am not really a scientist at heart). It may seem strange, but medical school seemed much easier to me than a career in the arts, where there seemed to be no prescribed path, and you had to fly by the seat of your pants, so to speak.
I should also tell you that my husband's branch of Rothschilds bear no relation to English lords or vintners; just the fairly poor German immigrant types. But it is a nice name (and he is a very nice man) and our kids get to call themselves the Rothschildren, which is fun.
Hope to hear more about you when you have a chance. You have my email address.
Very best to you
Bonnie
I have been lazy about writing -- procrastinating really. Bonnie Kaufman spurred me on to get back in touch. You and Paul and Linda are about the only people I've seen from PS 164 because of our high school reunions. I missed the last one -- did you go? How are you? I don't doubt that you love music -- I still remember your beautiful voice and can see you in that long, beautiful dress in the King and I -- just a few years ago ;-) Great to have this site to get back in touch. Would love to hear your news. Best-- Janet
Hello Dorothy!
I was in the Glee Club with you when we did The King and I, and I remember that three of us shared Anna's songs--I sang Getting to Know You, and you did the most beautiful "Hello Young Lovers"--I still remember how easily and effortlessly you sang. It is really nice to know that you had a musical career, however brief.
Karen Sitmanowski ( I am only approximating the spelling of her last name) also sang Anna, I think, or perhaps it was Tuptim, and I think Ellen Slobin sang the part ofLady Chiang, the head wife. I can't believe how little we were then; it must be 50 years.
I recently saw Kelli O'hara in South Pacific, and I thought of you! Though I had not yet stumbled across this Alumni Website.
Those documents that Mr. Karow taught have stayed with me. I only understood later on how important they were, especially when you realize how recently we had come through a war which had threatened our way of life. A few years ago, my daughter, in High school at the time, needed a piece for a school wide forensics program (poetry and prose recitations). She asked me for some suggestions, and I thought of "documents" and actually was able to recite Patrick Henry's speech to her verbatim! She used it and did well! I'd love to hear from you; take care
Bonnie Kaufman
Thanks for getting back to me Dorothy - When I got home today, I saw that you had responded to me and I yelled to my huband "OMG - Dorothy Lerner emailed me!" He said, "Who the H**** is Dorothy Lerner?" I told him the story and he laughed. I went to Campbell JHS and then John Bowne HS. I also graduated from Queens College but many years later - I wound up going back to school after my first marriage ended and got my degree in Psychology in 1994!!!. I am presently the Director of a Senior Center in LIC, Queens. But my first love still is music. I remember you sang "Hello Young Lovers" Isn't it funny what impresses us as youngsters? Hope you are doing good as well - keep me posted if you have time. Bye, Andrea
Hi! Dottie
I used to visit NY and DC quite often but recently very seldom. I was in NY 3 years ago. I just came back from a long business trip to Sydney, Singapore and Jakarta.
I remeber your long brunet hair style very well. Those were good or may be best time for US. many good memories for me.
Fumio
I was new in the school and in second grade. You had the "lead" in the The King and I. I loved to sing and I loved music (still do). I remembver when I heard you sing..I thought you were magnificant!! I was so young but I was your first fan!!! I never had the courage to talk to you although I looked up to you. Glad to hear that you got to sing as a career. I can never forget Dorothy Lerner.
I think I touched base with you a few years ago through the Classmates website. We wrote about our remberance of Mrs. Reppa and her blue hair. I just filled out some information on my page on this site. My mom is still alive, 90 going on 50 and I moved her out about three years ago. Unfortunately, although the area is still safe, the sense of neighborhood that existed when we were youinger is no longer there. Hope all is well with you.
Hi Dorothy
This is Fumio, brother of Yumiko.
I remember you very well. You invited me to your birthday party in 1958.
I also remember when Paul Simon came to our school he said that you are very good singer.
Are you still in touch with Rona who lived next door to us. Her brother was Mark.
75th Rd. was a nice neighberhood and have not changed much whne I visited the place few years ago. I still keep in touch with few of my friends at PS 164 and try to see them when travel to NY.
Fumio
Hi Dorothy (or should it be Dottie?)
I am surprised that you remember me...after all, I was the kid sister...and usually kid sisters are known as pests..:-) I live in Northridge, CA...which is about a good 30 minute drive North of Los Angeles. After we left NY in '63 and moved back to Japan, my parents and I went to Ireland from '68 to '71 and to Colombia from '72 to '73. Fumio had to stay and board in Japan because he had started College by '68. I moved to Los Angeles in '91 to get married. I used to work as an interpreter mainly in the foreign music industry in Japan as well as some movies and tv commercial shoots. I am now a stay at home mom. My mother and Fumio live in Tokyo. My father passed away in December of '77 after a long illness. Fumio is very busy with his job and travels a lot. I know he has been in touch with some of his classmates over the years and has also hooked up with a few more through this site. My mother visits me every summer and stays for 3 months...she is with me now and she remembers you and your beautiful voice very well. She sends her regards. My daughter is almost 16 and she can't wait to take her driver's test in December. The closest I made it back to the neighborhood was in June of '81...I was in transit between JFK and La Guardia Airports...I was so excited to see the Main Street sign on the expressway...but was so sad when the bus veered off towards La Guardia Airport. I do want to go back just even for a few hours to walk around the old neighborhood. Have you been back lately?
And thank you for the kind words for me and my family.
Yumiko
