The 5 & 10 was Park Variety. Then we had Dottie's, Hollywood Cleaners, the dress store, Barry's Laundry and Jack the shoemaker. and don't forget the barber
with the horse chair for us little kids.

Hi Andy:
Steve is doing well... He has been living in FLA for the past 20-years or so... He retired from the Air Force then continued to work for the Government as a civilian worker an a large Air Plane MFG Co (unsure of the name). He has three grown sons and one grand-daughter. I will tell him about this sight...
Anyway, my brother Mike thinks the name of that Chinese Restaurant next to Grand Union was called "Yees", was he right??

I think my classmate Kathy Hoo's (class of '66) father owned that Chinese restaurant next to the Grand Union. I happened to meet two people, in the early 80's, who were familiar with our neighborhood (and ate there too) and they thought Mr. Hoo had passed away a few years before but were not sure whether his family still owned the place or not. No, I never got to eat there, but I always wanted to!

Stella d'Oro was on Main street across the street from The Main Street Theatre. we went there all the time, i mostly ate pizza. they had a juke-box in the back. it was considered slightly upscale.

Yes Stella d'Oro. My dad loved that place though it was always questionable if it wasn't some sort of mafia front with all the men hanging around in the back. But they sure made great pizza!

We used to go to the pizza place for lunch. I think the place had a lunch special: two slices and a coke for 30 cents.

I remember my mom giving me $1 for my brother and myself--we'd each have 2 slices and a soda. When I got home at the end of the day I'd give my mom the $0.20 change. When I tell this to my kids today they don't believe me.

Does anyone remember the Candy Store on Main Street & Union Tpke? Remember, "CARL", he was behind the counter... He made the best Chocolate Malt Shakes Ever (remember the pretzel rods in the glass canister on the counter as well?) What were the names of the Husband & Wife Owners?? Remember the old phone booths in the back and playing Pin-Ball ($1.00 went along way)

I remember that candy store, though I usually hung out at Dottie's Luncheonette on Vleigh Place. I think it was Carl who'd hire a couple of us kids he saw hanging around on Saturday nights to assemble the Sunday newspapers out of their various sections and inserts. He'd give us $5 and a soda for our efforts. I have good memories of that candy store and that whole little shopping mall on Main and Union Turnpike. There was a hardware store, a grocery store, the Chinese restaurant...what else?

Interesting that the recollections here start on Vleigh Place but wound up ranging the whole stretch of Main Street, from about 72 avenue to Union Turnpike - the commercial heartland of Kew Gardens Hills. We really had a lot of stores and entertainment available to us. There's probably less available today - no bowling and no movies, that's for sure.
