PS 164 Alumni

The 5 & 10 was Park Variety. Then we had Dottie's, Hollywood Cleaners, the dress store, Barry's Laundry and Jack the shoemaker. and don't forget the barber
with the horse chair for us little kids.

I'm sure that if there's school security, they probably won't let you walk around, even with a hall pass.
I can understand your mom not wanting to move, especially if it's rent controlled. Also, change is so hard for the elderly. If I had my way my parents would still be in our house.

Do you see or talk to any people from the school.? I e-mailed Marlene Haberman, Andy Tivoli and Barbara Karnis. I think she lives down by you in Florida?
Delete
I just emailed Barbara Karnis. She lives about 1 1/2 hours from Miami. Alan Tivoli was in my class at 164. I recently
found Betty Zabriskie because her son lives in my daughter's building in NYC- crazy, huh!! I don't know if you knew her. I saw a bunch of people at the 1999 Jamaica
H.S. reunion: Mitchell Adler, Joe Allen, Arnie Sternheim,
Jeff Cohen- all from Vleigh Place.

Before it was Hollywood cleaners it started out as Kent cleaners. When they opened up they gave out free goldfish.

the barber shop was owned by "John." he lost it from gambling (believe it was on the horses). He had the 1st chair, there were revolving barbers on the other ones - a mean older barber in the middle chair. almost every kid went to this barber shop.

the "Luncheonette" (forgot name) was owned by a fat guy (looked like Jackie Gleason) and his skinnier wife. Hamburgers 30 cents, cheesburgers 35, mlk shakes 30 cents, malted 35. walking in, comics on the wall on the left (10cents, in early 60's then 12cents by middle 60's). magazines on the right.

pizza place across the street: slices 15cents. i was a coin collector and one time for change of my dollar was happy to get a 1935 "Standing Liberty" half-dollar which i had in my collection for many years.

Well, that was one of the luncheonettes... Dottie's, on the corner across the street, was the better one, I always thought - they were friendlier. The fat man and his skinny wife creeped me out a bit, to be honest - they looked like some ugly couple Mad Magazine would have thought up. But they had better stickball bats and balls.

Anyone remember Ben Turteltaub(?) from Key Food?

The fat/skinny (not dottie's) luncheonette went out of business. remember my natually empathetic mother feeling quite bad and wish she could lend them money. they were always pretty nice to me, but maybe because i bought a ton of superman comics (and, speaking of Mad Magazine - i most likely bought my copies there...)

Oh my gosh, so many wonderful memories have just come rushing back reading these posts! Dotties had the best vanilla and chocolate egg cremes..I remember the candy being to the left of the counter, spauldeen balls were opposite the counter. Carl's on Union Turnpike was my second choice but was always entranced with the wooden phone booth in the back. I remember my brother, Bill ,and I (once we moved to 79th Ave from 77th Road) would take turns on Sunday walking up to the Cake Box for Kaiser rolls and doughnuts and the Sunday Daily news...I couldn't wait to get to the comics. Summers were great...my mom worked and I spent most of my time hanging out with Clarence in the park, playing skully and hopscotch and running thru the water. My kids can not believe that I was allowed to walk down to Main street at 8 and 9 years old, go to the movies or bowling, then grab 2 slices of pizza and a grape soda @ the pizza place and finish up with a cone @ Baskin Robbins...I explored that whole area (I had forgotten about the Bunny Trail!)...now my poor kids can't play outside alone. Remember the A&P on Main Street? I remember the Green Stamps that my mother used to collect and redeem at the S&H Green Stamp store...gosh, I could go on forever.

Did you try the charlotte russe's at the Cake Box?
Which Bunny Trail are you talking about? I lived on 78th Rd between Park
Drive East and 136th St. Behind our house was a bunny trail where we used to bury dead birds.

what was amazing is that one block of Vleigh Place (if i'm not mistaken) supported (sort of/at least for a while) TWO candy stores (my-side-of-the-street candy store/NOT "Dotties" went out of business). i used to go to the one on the Key Food side (this is early 60's) because it was sllightly closer (didn't have to cross the street). and, yes, it was amazing that kids could just wander all around the neighborhood unsupervised. at age 8. i was allowed to go anywhere within the the rectangular boundary of Main Street, Park Drive East, Union Turnpike and Jewell Avenue. walking, bicycle, alone, with friends, friends older brohters, whatever...movies, library. of course in the early 60's much fewer cars, and they drove much slower, so we could play in the street without any problem. was easy to play (on 137th street near 72nd street) for 10 minutes before any cars would pass...

I remember my mother giving me empty soda bottles then I asked for money to go to Dottie's. The small bottles were worth 2 cents, the larger ones 5 cents.

And I remember going grocery shopping at the Key Food store with my mom. She always separated the taxable items from the non-taxable. Who knew we wouldn't need that skill when we grew up!

Bonnie - I remember the 2 cents for soda bottles (this was early 60's at Key Food) but don't remember 6 cent bottles.  Also remember being able to pick up items there for my mother without paying.  One other memory of Key food is the fruit and vegetable man there had 10 kids and actually supported them on his salary.
