The best pizza I ever had was at Mama Lucy's on Main Street. It's been 30 years but I can still taste that pizza and can still see the two guys who used to work there flipping dough over their heads.

Anyone remember their names?
____________

One of my favourite places was the deli on Vleigh Place. Keeping myself supplied with Italian ices, wacky packages and gum used up most of my spending money as a child!

Any fans of the deli here? Do you remember the names of the two guys who ran it? They were there for years and years.
____________

What bits of Flushing trivia do YOU remember?

Post questions and answers here!

ok - I remember Mama Lucy's too. Now it is Benji's Kosher Pizza. I worked at Baskin Robbins in high school with Howard Goldman, my brother Mark and Eric Morgenstern. I remember Howie and I would make clown cones look like monster cones. I think Mr. Chen was our manager.

There was also the 5&10 where we used to get our school supplies, baseball cards, stickball bats and Spaulding balls. The other pizza place was Capri's down on the other end of the street by 73 Ave. By the way, if you haven't been back lately, the Baskin Robbins is now a bank...so sad!

LOL, yes, Ed. Chen wanted the clown cones to look one way but we made them all 'angry' with crazy teeth and wicked eyes. Those were the days when I would drink a black and white shake every shift and still eat several scoopes of ice cream. Gee, look at the time, I 've got to get up early for my spinning class.

Yes. Only about 3 or 4 years ago, I went into the Baskin Robbins with my family and actually bumped into someone I knew (a friend of my parents) and hadn't seen since I graduated from PS164 and moved, in 1975! Talk about coincidence! Then, last June, we went back and saw that the ice cream parlor was no longer there. Sigh...

I remember once when Howard Goldman made a bunch of his scary clown cones and a little kid came in, dragging his mother along, insisting on her buying one for him. With one look at the display window, he ran out of the store.

I remember the whipped cream and icing fight that John Cosachov and I once had. In about 5 minutes we managed to get the store so messy that we had to close it for about an hour to clean up. Good thing Mr. Chen was a manager in absentia.

I remember that once you were in sixth grade AND if you had a note from home, you were able to go OUT for lunch. We would go to Mama Lucy's and with $1.00 you could get a slice and a coke and then go get ice cream from Baskin Robbins. I also remember the shock I felt when a slice went up to .50.......Did they think we were made of money!! :)
I also remember many birthday parties at Mama Lucy's....I'll have to find my pictures.....I worked at Maxi Discount Drugs which was right next door to the Movie Theater....What a line we would get right before a movie!! I would always eat those Jelly Rings that we sold - They were in an open box on the counter, unwrapped and you would buy them that way. That's what made them easy to "borrow"!!! I remember DebTeen & the 5&10...that guy was a little cranky but Ruth was the best!!

Maxi Discount Drugs! There's a name from the past!!! I used to love to look at the makeup in there. Thanks for reminding me! (I moved after 6th grade, so it's harder for me to remember names of places than it is for the rest of you who continued on through JHS and HS in NYC.)

I remember Maxi! I loved looking at all the nail polish!!!!!!! There was so much stuff in that little space! Very fun for a kid.

My first job was delivering prescriptions for them on my bike to people in the neighborhood. I don't imagine that they even deliver prescriptions to people's houses anymore, let alone trusting a 15 year old to do it.

The best pizza was Gloria's in down town flushing. Near John's Bargin store. It was the best. I still remember the taste and you could get a slice for .35 Those were the days!
Delete
yes, i remember glorias, they had the best cheese on their pizza!! I can still taste it....
Delete
Yes! And people would line up down the street waiting. I always used to burn the roof of my mouth at Gloria's because the pies were always straight out of the oven. They could not make htem fast enough.

All this talk about Mama Lucy - here is the ad they ran in the school newspaper........

I wonder if the phone number still works? :-)
