Does anyone know if Mrs. Finkelstein, Mrs. May, Mrs. Bromberg, Mrs. Berman, Mrs. Sondike are still alive? Back then they seemed old, but when I start to think, some of them were probably younger than they looked. Was anyone in contact with any of them?

He was a friend of my father and came to our house on 137th street and when we moved to Long Island in 1965 he visted just after his heart attack. he had a 1957 Plymouth. and yes, "snot-nosed Gulkin" was a mean name...it was because he picked his nose

I know all about the gray plymoth as he parked it near my frends house and washed it with there garden hose. I used to fix things for Mrs. Gulkin and I also visited her in Fla. when she was living there.

it was a pretty old car to have in 1965 and think it looked old with faded paint, rust and dents. he referred to it as his "old jalopy." suppose it looked old to me because we bought a new 1957 Plymouth in '57 and, because it was a convertible, and leaked in the rain, traded it in for a '58. it was a Belvedere model (the middle level) but believe Mr. Gulkin's was a Savoy, the lo-end. The Fury was the de-luxe of the 3 styles with the biggest engine.

Yes a Savoy faded gray and it too leaked from the rear window. His was low end with the old flathead low power 6. He did not drive it often and it was like a landmark parked on 77th ave near Vleigh Pl. Onece a year he drove it to Vermont.

for some reason could not reply to your last message about Gulkin's Plymouth being a 6 cylinder. i was pretty much aware he hardly ever drove it. did not remember it being a convertible (which would explain the leaky rear window. think the Savoy model did not come in a 2-tone like the Belevedere or Fury. there were not that many Furys which i believe had a bigger 8-cylinder than the Belevedere which probably had the 318. i remember Mrs. Gulkin as being small with dark hair in a old-fashioned style

Gulkins car was a 4 door sedan with the old flat head 6 and it developed a leak between the rear window glass and the metal roof due to the ageing of the rubber window seal gasket. He attempted to seal it with some stuff in a tube but it did not work.I never said he had a convertiblle, sorry if it sounded as if I implied that it was. I may have a photo of his car someplace, or my frend may have it in the background in his old home movies,as it was parked outside of my frends house and rarely moved, we called it a landmark.

I remember Mrs Sondike since she was my 6th grade teacher and also as a Blue Beret I was positioned for a time at the spot where she parked her car. I also remember when word went around the class that her fake eyelashes were falling off and she asked me what was going on. I was the fool to speak up and tell her the truth. I still remember her taking it all in stride and saying that it was important to her to look good for her class. With that, she ripped off the fake eyelash and went on with the rest of the class.
Mr. Edelstein in 5th grade and his suits - not just pants and shirt but a double breasted suit with papers in all of the pockets. I even remember the class play about the brothers who were killed during World War 2 that they made a stamp about. I wonder if he wrote the class play too.
I cant remember my 4th grade teacher but I do remember how she would remove the spit from either side of her mouth.
I will be old and grey (hey, just like now!) and I will always remember these strange things.

mr. edelstein singled me out in assembly 6th grade for not wearing the proper tie. i was made to stand-up while he told me what a horrible person and disrespectful i was. this went on for at least 5 minutes. finally, one of the other teachers, who felt sorry for me and thought the length of me standing there getting insulted was long enough said "please, Mr. Edelstein" at which point he stopped and i was allowed to sit down with my wrong color tie.

Wow. I myself dont remember Mr Edelstein having a temper but then again I also dont remember what he taught us either. That is either my memory lapse or maybe we really werent taught anything. My horror at assembly was having to announce that what ever class I was in at the time (4th grade or 5th) had 100% white shirts. I got stage fright and just stood there not being able to speak. Mrs Sondike put her arms around me and finally had me make the necessary announcement. Jeez, so many years later and I still remember how scared I was. And I still remember the choke hold from Mrs Sondike too.
I think it might have been in the 4th grade when I chose my own clothes to wear and put on a burgundy tie, burgundy shirt and maybe burgundy pants (???) and my sister who is 2 years older looked at me at breakfast and asked when I joined the Mafia. My mother didnt even bother having me change my clothes and off to school I went. I never wore that combination again. And I havent joined the Mafia yet either.
Do you even remember the color of the tie? I remember the controversy about ties - were string ties allowed or not. Friends of mine now who dont know how to tie a tie find it amazing that we had to wear ties and that it wasnt a parochial school.
Delete
ties had to be red if i remember. string ties unacceptable on assembly days. i am a few years ahead of you so possibly rules relaxed a little by your day. edelstein really went on a tear with me - from out of nowhere - very (misplaced) anger. although, in his defense, a the year before during "hobby" period he was benign (wasn't my teacher but, from Gulkin, we had to go over to him for his judgement on toy models we made).
Delete
His name was Ben Edelson nd he was a 5th grade teacher. He led the stamp club.

well I guess that says something about my memory. I was close though. Hey, it has been 40 or so years ago. I dont remember a stamp club but that sure would answer why the class play had to do with the stamp and the history behind it.
