Ms. Belle Simon - 3rd Grade Teacher

Who had Ms. Simon as their 3rd Grade Teacher?? (too bad I didn't get her son, Paul's autograph back then, what did I know??) Anyway, does anyone remember her applying face cream from a Mayonnasie Jar?? For some strange reason, I vividly recall her dapping that stuff on her face and thinking "how gross, she's putting Mayonnaise on her face (LOL)

I was lucky to have Ms. Simon for first and third grade. She was the one teacher that I remember the most . I would visit her at her house on 137th st. She had a big piano in her living room and on one or two ocassions i got to sit with paul at the piano as he played. I did not really know who he was at the time... but i enjoyed it just the same.

do you remember the address of Mrs. Simon's house? we lived 72-22 137th. a little past the "short-cut" before 137th "Tees" into i think 73rd avenue or 73rd rd....

Don't know that but I do remember the concert she organized in 1958?59? in the school auditorium with Tom and Jerry singing. A nickel a head.

I remember that concert too..I sat in the back of the auditorium for Tom and Jerry. Little did we know back then who we were listening too and, I think Mrs. Simon was a substitute teacher back then, right? On another note, does anyone remember having to memorize and recite the preamble to the Consitutuion, or Patrick Henry's speech, etc?

Hi Sharon,

I actually had Mrs. Simon for part of the fourth grade, substituting for Mrs. Rosenberg, who was having surgery. She was fabulous. Really, both of them were! Paul Simon came to perform at an assembly when I was in the 6th grade. He was still part of Tom and Jerry and only 16 years old. Mrs. Simons introduced me to him, thinking he might be able to help me get into the music business. He could care less! What would he want with an 11year old? When did you graduate? I think you are younger than I, as I do not recognize your name. I'm 61 years old and graduated in 1959. Thanks for the memory!

Hey Jeff.. I remember Alice In Wonderland...I was the Cheshire Cat. Apparently Art Garfunkel played the Cheshire Cat years before. It was hard to get my face muscles back to normal after having to maintain that grin the whole performance.

Hey Lisa, I remember playing the part of the Duchess. It was so hard for me because I was pretty softspoken and they kept trying to get me to project my voice. Do you have any photos from any of those plays?

Mrs. Simon was my 6th grade teacher. She was doing a long term sub for Mrs. Giordano. I graduated in '58, and It's the first year that I remember Paul performing at school. Our class sat in the first rows, I in the second. They were Tom & Jerry back then, but only Paul came to play. I guess Artie didn't have the same parental obligation. Anyway, I was very impressed that Paul didn't stand center stage, he sat on the steps off to the side. After the performance, he signed autographs and handed out postcard-sized photos. I still have the autograph, (See attachment) but the postcard is lost in the shuffle of stuff. I was in the second row again when I saw him play at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium back in the 70's. Still crazy after all these years.

I graduated 6th grade in 1963, and I am not sure my memory serves me correctly. I never had Mrs. Simon, but I do remember Paul coming in and singing under the name of Jerry Landers. He signed my hand and I didn't wash it for a week. And later on he made it big using his real name. At least that is the way I remember it. I remember Mrs. Simon with red hair I think and certainly that she was a real nice lady. I am glad she had as long a life as she did.
