I recall learning to ride rather late - Sara and I went to some posh party on the Island (perhaps a Dome party) at which all the kids were riding around - except Sara and myself, neither of whom could ride. We were so shamed and depressed that the next weekend we learned to ride in a few hours. The thrill of zooming down Danger Hill!

Shortly thereafter, on some midweek holiday (Bklyn/Queens Day or some such), Sara, Kingman, Kinglin and I went riding in the park. Having the feeling we were being followed, we rode with all speed, for some unfathomable reason, to the Unisphere. The bandits caught up with us, and, under the threat of a large rusty chain, relieved a number of us of our bicycles (Mine, definitely, and either Kingman or Kinglin's). I don't remember much more, merely that we reported it to the 107th Precinct under the careful eyes of some parents, and that I was relegated to Riding Awheel on Sheffield Steel until college.

Cheers!

We brought that bike back to Japan and rode it around my neighborhood too but it was not the same. I had that bike with me until I was 11 or 12 when my parents bought met a bigger bike with hand brakes. But my first bike was my favorite bike.
