I do remember Mrs. Gruen. Her daughter, who seemed very tall to me, used to help her teach the ballet class. At one time, before it was a dance studio, the building housed a small synagogue/Hebrew School. I remember attending it for two years prior to switiching to the Jewish Center of KGH.

I also remember Susan Kupferberg. We were in the same class in fourth grade and then in the eighth and ninth grades.I think that her younger brother's name was Larry. I remember Jeanne Polonyi, Frieda's daughter and they did live on the same block as Susan. If anyone has contact information about Susan, I would love it. I remember when her mom passed away. I think that we were in seventh grade.Her dad remarried around the time she was Sweet 16; I met her step-sister for the first time at her Sweet 16 party.

does it help to tell you that my mom was born in Germany? I think your parents both came from Hungary? My mother came to the states in 1936. My father was Alsatian, but came over before the war. Anyway, we lived right off of Vleigh Place. Also, weren't you neighbors with the Kupferbergs and their cousin Robert, whose last name I am blocking on right now.

Hi Elaine -
I'm racking my brain to remember you, but we have two things in common: I also got my jr high "prom" dress from my mom's store - today I would consider it hideous or fabulous. I got two dresses that year - 1960. Both were ice cream colors, one blue, one green, in layers of chiffon, one for prom, and one for grad at the Parson's movie theater.

As for the dance school, yes, it was Progressive then. I also took lessons. I still remember the dance we learned for a recital, and yes I also remember the leotard - a one shouldered, one sleeved, blue thing - kind of a bit back in style.

I remember that the teacher was Mrs. Gruen. I took ballet there. It's just amazing how we can remember these things! Really was such an important time! And our brains were still forming and the stuff stayed! Elaine Wolff

I went to ballet on Vleigh Place in the fifties. The teacher was Charlotte Gruen. Susan and Elizabeth Ford studied there too; Susan was my age. This must have been before Bill Garr.

All I remember was the car....it seemed huge. I don't remember a thing about ballet school.
